New FT Workspace feature delivers tailored content recommendations

The need to stay informed on the key stories that matter is one that’s widely shared across the FT’s business, government and education subscriber base. Although the actions those stories inform might differ, a recurring piece of feedback we hear from subscribers is that they value recommendations and content suggestions that may pertain to their role or area of study.

The FT is working on a host of new tools, features and integrations that solve problems for subscribers who use FT.com for work or in the classroom. FT Workspace is one such feature we’re developing to make it quicker and easier for those on their organisation or university subscription to understand what content is likely to be most relevant and useful for them.

What is FT Workspace?

In a nutshell, the idea for FT Workspace is to create an area on FT.com where business, government and education subscribers can get tailored and relevant content recommendations that relate to their job or main areas of interest. Ultimately the goal of Workspace is to help those customers get the information they need to make decisions more efficiently.

While the vision for Workspace is that eventually it will also be the go-to hub where subscribers can access the other FT features they use for their work (links that have been shared using Advanced Sharing, and sections of articles that have been highlighted, to provide two examples), the current iteration focuses on telling subscribers what they need to know based on their profile.

Version one of FT Workspace has the following features:

  • A Workspace icon on the main FT.com navigation bar that directs to workspace.ft.com
  • Content recommendations based on the user’s profile
  • Additional questions to answer to help provide better recommendations
  • Explainers next to articles explaining why we recommended them

How do I complete my profile on FT Workspace?

When signing up to an FT Professional Subscription, users are asked to supply some information that describes the type of work they do (although depending on when the user registered, these questions may not have been mandatory at the time).

We use this existing information in order to serve up some basic recommendations, but these recommendations become far more tailored and powerful when users provide more detail around the industries, regions and companies they’re most interested in.

To complete your FT Workspace profile just follow these 3 steps:

  1. Visit workspace.ft.com, or click the Workspace icon on the FT.com homepage
  2. Review the information in your profile on the right-hand side of the page
  3. Add to your profile and update any details that are outdated

Why can’t I currently see or access FT Workspace?

Workspace is a new feature that’s still very much in its infancy. As such, we’re phasing the roll out to users on their organisation and university subscriptions in order to help us monitor adoption and develop it as we learn more about what subscribers value and what they don’t.

If you’re part of an FT Professional Subscription and don’t currently see the Workspace icon when logged in and on the FT.com homepage, you shouldn’t have long to wait as we’re steadily ramping up access towards 100% of subscribers. If in the meantime you’d like to discuss FT Workspace, or the other tools and features available as part of your subscription, please contact the FT Customer Success team.

As FT Workspace has been built to serve the needs of subscribers with corporate, government or education access to FT.com, customers with individual subscriptions to FT.com won’t be able to use this feature. It is however always worth checking if your organisation or university already has an FT Professional Subscription you can join.
